Wozniacki warms up for Paris with Brussels crown

BRUSSELS: Danish world number one Caroline Wozniacki warmed up for the French Open in style on Saturday with a three-set win over Chinese hope Shuai Peng in the WTA Brussels Open final.

Wozniacki, yet to land a Grand Slam, started nervously as Peng landed the first set 6-2 but righted herself to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and take her 16th career title.

The Dane had already gained a boost in the semis with her three-set win over reigning French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

Wozniacki now heads for Paris where she faces Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm in her first round match on the red clay.

Peng, ranked 31 in the world, had seen off number two seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia in her semi but was unable to capitalise on her strong start as Wozniacki roared back for her fourth title of the season having had treatment to her left thigh in the opening set.

"I needed this tournament to finalise my preparations for Roland Garros," said Wozniacki, who finally outlasted Peng after 2hr 35min to add Brussels to title wins this campaign at Dubai, Indian Wells and Charleston.

IPL: Rajasthan give Warne winning send-off

MUMBAI: Australian leg-spin wizard Shane Warne quit professional cricket on Friday after leading Rajasthan Royals to a 10-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in his farewell Indian Premier League match.

Rajasthan, already out of contention, rode on Shane Watson's all-round show (3-19 and 89 not out) to achieve a 134-run target and finish their campaign with six victories in 14 games of the Twenty20 tournament.

Australian Watson smashed six sixes and nine fours in his explosive 47-ball knock, while Rahul Dravid remained unbeaten with a 32-ball 43.

Wasim Akram criticizes PCB decision

KARACHI: Former captain of Pakistan cricket team Wasim Akram has criticized PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt’s decision to remove Shahid Afridi from captaincy on Saturday.

India to host T20 Blind Cricket World Cup in Dec 2012

ISLAMABAD: India will host the inaugural Twenty-20 Blind Cricket World Cup in December 2012.

This was told by Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC), Chairman, Syed Sultan Shah here on Thursday.

The PBCC Chairman, Syed Sultan Shah said that the WBCC adopted new eye-sight classification rules.

The WBCC discussed and decided various matters in the meeting.

"Ten WBCC full member countries will take part in this event. The
event will be inaugurated on December 3 (The international day for the disables)," Shah said.

The Chairman said that WBCC has invited the bids from the member counties to host conventional one-day Cricket World Cup 2014.

"WBCC will request the international Paralympics Committee (IPC) to
recognise WBCC as a governing body of Cricket for the Blind and further to include the shorter version of T-20 Cricket for the Blind in Paralympics as a Medal sport.

Addressing a press conference here, Shah said that all the totally blind (B1) Cricket Players will wear dark glasses in the field.

Shah, who is also the first vice-president of World Blind Cricket said
that the Pakistan-Indian series will boost up both the countries relations as well.

India blind cricket team will tour Pakistan in November for a 3 ODI and
3 twenty-20 matchs series.

Shah said that PBCC hosted the 15th AGM of WBCC at UAE on May 14-15.

Shah recalled that the International Olympic committee (IOC) recognised International Cricket Council (ICC) last year and T-20 version will be included in IOC events soon and as a prelude the Cricket was officially played in the 2010 Asian Games as a medal sport.

Former captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer have, along with agent Mazher Majeed, been charged with conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments.

The quartet were charged after police inquiries following accusations in the News of the World newspaper that no-balls were deliberately bowled in the fourth Test match at London's Lord's Cricket Ground last August.

Friday's hearing at Southwark Crown Court, south London, is expected to be
a procedural affair where the date for the trial proper will be set.

Of the three players, only Asif has stated his intention to attend Friday's proceedings.

The four accused appeared at a hearing at London's City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, on March 17, which set the date for Friday's court case, and were granted unconditional bail.

The British-based Majeed was told to surrender his passport.

At the March hearing, prosecutor Sally Walsh said all four men were accused of having "conspired together and with others unknown for #150,000 ($240,000) as inducement or reward to bowl three no-balls at the fourth Test".

She added the three no-balls had been delivered "for the purpose of enabling another to cheat at gambling".

Prior knowledge of when no-balls will occur could be exploited in what is known as 'spot-betting', hugely popular in South Asia, whereby gamblers bet on various possible incidents in a match rather than the final result.

In English law, accepting corrupt payments is an offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906 and carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

Cheating is an offence under Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005, carrying a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

A separate and independent International Cricket Council (ICC) anti-corruption tribunal has already banned the three players for a minimum of five years each.

He also claimed that the current West Indies management interfered with his batting during matches, and subjected him to intense questioning about his approach, as he defended himself against allegations of a lack of discipline.

Chanderpaul, a veteran of 129 Tests, 268 ODIs, and 22 Twenty20 International, will add greater substance to a batting line-up that struggled during the ODI series, which Pakistan won 3-2.

Three other players that did not feature in the ODIs have been shipped into the squad for the first Test, which starts Thursday at the Guyana National Stadium.

They are fast bowler Fidel Edwards, left-handed batsman Brendan Nash, and uncapped teenaged opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite.

Edwards is fit again following a year out of the game with back troubles, and has been recalled to boost a fast bowling attack which also includes his compatriot Kemar Roach and rookie Andre Russell.

BRIDGETOWN: Veteran batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan was recalled to the West Indies squad in place of opener Devon Smith for the final two matches of the series against Pakistan which has already been lost 3-0.

The 30-year-old Sarwan has featured in 166 one-day internationals and has four centuries and 35 fifties.

The fourth one-dayer takes place in at the Kensington Oval here on Monday with the fifth and final game in Guyana on May 5.
